Martnez’s professional career took a flight when he won the light heavyweight division of the 1997 National Physique Committee (NPC) New York Metro Championships. He continued to participate in NPC competitions up until 2001, when he entered his first IFBB competition, the Night of Champions, and finished eighth. He participated in his first Arnold Classic the following year, in 2002, and finished 13th. The same year, he took part in his first Ironman Pro Invitational and finished ninth. He eventually won the Night of Champions in 2003.

He was ninth in his first Mr. Olympia in 2004, but he went on to take fifth in 2005, third in 2006, and second in 2007 Ronnie Coleman predicted in 2005 that Martnez would succeed him as Mr. Olympia, but Jay Cutler held the title in 2006 and 2007, then Dexter Jackson (2008).
