Phil Heath was born in the heart of Seattle, United States and inclined towards fitness since childhood when he got inspired from the former IFBB winners. 

He went to Rainier Beach High School in Seattle, where he was varsity basketball team captain and the key shooting guard.  He received an athletic scholarship to the University of Denver, where he majored in business administration while playing shooting guard for the university’s Division I basketball team. 

Suddenly, he grew interest in bodybuilding and Heath began competing in bodybuilding in 2002. He won the NPC (National Physique Committee) USA Championships in 2005, earn the right to compete as an IFBB Pro. The next year, he won his first two IFBB professional events: the Colorado Pro Championships and the New York Pro Championship. Heath finished sixth at the Arnold Classic in 2007.  Despite the fact that he was still qualified to participate in the 2007 Mr. Olympia event, Heath choose not to compete, citing that he needed more time to develop his form.

Heath won the Iron Man competition in 2008 and finished second to Dexter Jackson in the Arnold Classic. Heath finished third in his Mr. Olympia debut in 2008, becoming the first beginner to do so since Flex Wheeler in 1993. He finished fifth in the 2009 Mr. Olympia competition and second in the 2010 event. He was crowned in 2011.
